There is a patch that fixes this problem but as far as I can tell it has not made its way into the upstream ppp source. What is happening is that the mobile ISP is demanding that the client accept MS DNS servers which ppp refuses to do so the connection is terminated. From my experimentation is not ISP specific rather than cell specific. For example I have AT&T it will work in one "area" and fail across town, still on the same AT&T network.
