Still broken... but with all my "testing" I neglected the rather obvious... to switch to another screen saver. The fact of the matter is, this happens with EVERY screensaver installed by the default Ubuntu Intrepid install. It's still related to compiz but otherwise I have no idea. As soon as any screensaver activates, the screen blackens, flickers, and then immediately gets bright and "awake" again. (Currently not set to require a password as it's at home)
