Sebastien thanks for following up on this bug.

I went to the link you gave for getting the backtrace software. The
repository sources lines did not work when I replaced hardy with
intrepid.

Here are some additional things I have learned:

It is almost certainly caused by the visualisation (GOOMBA) because
Totem does not crash when I disable the visualisation. It also seems to
be a clash between the visualisation and compiz because it does not
crash when desktop-effects are turned off.

Compiz On + Visualisation On = Totem Crashes
Compiz On + Visualization Off = Totem does not crash
Compiz Off + Visualization On = Totem does not crash
Compiz Off + Visualization Off = Totem does not crash

Here is my video card:
