I was getting this segfault in edgy after an upgrade from dapper. This was fixed after I changed my default keyboard layout (in System -> Preferences -> keyboard) from "fr-latin-9" (as it was on dapper) to "France" as "fr-latin-9" is not proposed as an option in edgy ... HIH
