kieron: I'm sorry to hear you are going back to Windows. Good luck! Everyone: I upgraded my kernel to the upstream Linus-Torvalds-official 2.6.27 release candidate, and the problem went away. I was getting the problem reliably until then, so I'm pretty sure one of the several forcedeth patches in that kernel fixed it. Since Intrepid is going to us 2.6.27, I expect this problem to be fixed in Intrepid. By the way, I've been upgrading to newer 2.6.27 release candidates (or actually git snapshots) every now and then and the problem hasn't recurred.
