I think I had a setting in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf ponting all of o the jobs to a cups server (don't remember cups version... was on SuSE 8.2) my ubuntu machines. I checked right now the man for cupsd but cannot' find it. I removed the line pointing to the server and activated auto finding of lan printers, everything then went ok and we could print happily. May not be so helpful but I don't remeber more and far away to check comments I left in the conf. Sorry.
