that feature is available in intrepid now. you can even try the
"alpha/beta" ifupdown system configu plugin. to do so you can use
--plugins=keyfile,ifupdown (or just ifupdown) in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-
system-settings.conf.

If you find bugs for that backend, please let me know. remember to sudo
killall nm-system-settings to apply those changes or to make changes to
/etc/network/interfaces effective.
