Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This bug report has been created to separate people with dead screen/consoles
on ATI-PCIE and x-series video cards from systems from those with AGP 9000
series cards in relation to this bug:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/67487

My computer has specs:
AMD Turion64 ML-37 2.0 ghz
ATI x700 mobility Radeon 128 meg PCIE
1 gig DDR333 RAM

The Edgy Eft Live CD 6.10 creates the following problem:
On booting in standard or safe mode, with or without 771/other screen boot
parameters (as in all boot parameter listed under CD help and alternative boot
have tried), the main x-session screen goes dead, though sound seems to be
functioning. In addition, all console screens go dead (or get hopelessly
garbled and unreadable?).

By removing splash from the boot line so that it reads:

=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper/initrd.gz ramdisk_size=1048576
root=/dev/ram rw quiet --

the system will boot, and x-session screen will go dead as before,
however ctrl-alt-{f1-f6} will switch to a console screen where the
temporary CD xorg.conf can be edited to allow a x-session/gdm relaunch.

I will attach the original xorg.conf that seems to be partially responsible for
the problem.
I got a working session by changing line "ati" to "vesa."

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
