I had the same problem on a different machine, an amd64 Gutsy 7.10. Could be bypassed like above, by symlinking the .ICE-unix/NUMBER from strace to .ICE-unix/CORRECTNUMBER.
Symptoms included slow evince start, can't open menu in OpenOffice, OpenOffice crashing. The machine had been running long time with the same X session. Then I logged out, changed language and logged back in.
