I've done what you said and if I start my computer without external monitor I get a blank screen blinking. If I plug-in the external monitor and restart X then the eee screen is still black and blinking sometimes but it works the external monitor.
I don't have that problem anymore but it's not ease to unplug the external monitor and go out with the eeepc if you unnderstand. In 8.04 I was turning of the eeepc monitor from System-Preferences- Screen Resolution. This bug is especially manifesting when both eeepc screen and external monitor are plugged in.
