Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

The dpkg-reconfigure script for xserver-xorg fails to detect the video
card and monitor hardware on my system. It defaults to generic vesa and
generic monitor. This is dapper specific; it was all good on breezy.

lspci detects the video card. The output of lspci -vvx is at the bottom
of this report.

Bugs 50503 and 50504 are probably related to this bug.
