I compiled a kernel without EFI support, like mentioned here, but I
still encountered the same problems with the iPod.

Does this mean that the problem is not only related to EFI support?

I am using a Sony Vaio laptop (505exp) and it has two usb ports (one on
each side of the computer). Could it be that it has some sort of
internal USB hub and that is causing the problems?
