The answer to your question is yes--after I changed my default video
card from ATI to VESA, the problem went away.

However, I don't consider that this closes the bug, because Ubuntu
shouldn't misdetect a videocard in the first place.

For the record, my video card is an ATI mobility radeon 7500. However,
in spite of its name, this card clearly does NOT work with the ATI
driver and should NOT be auto-installed by Dapper during installation
from the live CD. VESA should be installed instead.
