I have a Acer Aspire 1524 and I have a similar problem. After I upgraded kubuntu from 5.10 to 6.06 the sound volume was extemely low. The max volume of 6.06 was like 60% on 5.10. On the other hand, the sound volume works perfectly in windows XP, which leads me to believe that it is somekind of hardware volume level set too low by default.
