I am having the same problems, using a chip identified as "S3 Inc.
86C270-294 Savage/IX-MV" on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. Admittedly it's
not the most up-to-date hardware out there, but it worked just fine in
Breezy. After upgrading to Dapper, xorg is consistently at over 50% CPU,
and playing video is near undoable. 100% CPU, and you can choose between
either insane framedrops or a/v going out of sync after a few seconds.

Have tried disabling DRI, but that made no difference, unfortunately.
Attaching my xorg.conf, but it's pretty standard stuff, and entirely configured
through debconf.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.
