Right, I see where the problem with this lies now. I indeed had ATI's drivers installed in Breezy, which is where the directory /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri with its contents might have appeared, and they were never removed when I removed them in Dapper.
That is why libGL.so.1.2 replacement mentioned this, and why for instance Vince on the mailing list didn't find the directory structure on his machine at all.
