Hi Everyone,
The University of Toronto Department of Computer Science has a faculty opening for an Assistant Professor in the Teaching Stream. This isn't an adjunct/sessional position, but one of the rare full-time, permanent faculty positions for people dedicated to a career in teaching. Teaching Stream faculty at U of Toronto are the teaching analogues of traditional tenure-track or research focused faculty. They attend faculty meetings, play leadership roles in the department, have 12 month salaries but no teaching load during the 4 month Canadian summer (like other Canadian faculty positions), and receive sabbaticals from teaching after 6 years as assistant professor. The main difference is that teaching load during the year is 3 courses per semester, and promotion to Associate/Full professor is based on teaching rather than research. The current group of 12 teaching stream faculty includes 2 assistant professors and 10 associate/full professors. Please encourage excellent candidates who are excited about a career in teaching to apply by early October (official deadline is October 11, details at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/13861, but review will continue until the position is filled). Some of the current teaching stream faculty also do research on computer science education (https://uoftcsed.github.io/). There will be opportunities to collaborate with tenure-track faculty like Joseph Jay Williams and Tovi Grossman. For example, on topics at the intersection of computer science, education, human-computer interaction, randomized A/B comparisons, and statistical machine learning. U of Toronto also has a position for a "teaching postdoc" with a 2-2 course load (4 month summer is free), aimed at making people more competitive for teaching faculty positions ( http://www.cs.toronto.edu/dcs/documents/recruiting2019/TeachingPostdoc0419.pdf). People can apply to both the postdoc and assistant professor teaching positions. Please forward this on to your colleagues or people who might be interested, as these positions come up very rarely!
