One suggestion is to use Pillow instead of PIL. So far as I know PIL is frozen and all new development is on Pillow. It is backwardly compatible although for this case that hardly matters! But it's just possible that this is fixed in Pillow? But if this is all you are using PIL for then its overkill and you would be much better off sing a different approach.
