If your students need to provide a unique email address, then that is a possibility to use to distinguish between ones with the same name. In Sweden, where this is known as the 'Anders Andersson' problem (that being the most common name in Sweden, and any organisation with more than a handful of members is likely to have several), a good many apps are now showing pictures of the Anders Anderssons and asking people to select based on that. The upshot of this is that Sweden is discovering that Prosopagnosia -- difficulty in telling the difference between faces is rather more common than has been known. Just in case you come up with this idea yourself ....
