They're fairly recent and they definitely got me started with learning the syntax. After you're through with those, he also has a series on wxPython. A couple ebooks you'd be interested in would be Dive into Python or A Byte of Python, both very thorough and descriptive, the latter being a bit easier to newer programmers. A great book might consider purchasing would be Wesley Chun's Core Python Programming. This is only a slice of the cake though, try Googling around for more resources.
