The official tutor is designed for experienced programmers. There are many beginners tutors too. Try some of the ones here http://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide/NonProgrammers until you find one you like and then go through it. It will only take a day of your time to cover all the basics but it will be well invested.
