Yes, I hadn't seen the Thompson paper before but I notice it was dated 1989 and the guy I'm discussing left in 1991. I know he read the ACM papers so now I guess I know where he got the idea! Mind you even though I know how he did it I'm still not sure I could replicate the feat even now!
