They find the path to the file by doing: root = os.path.dirname(os.path.dirname(os.path.dirname(os.path.dirname(__file__)))) Which will fail if the subunit module has been installed to a virtualenv. This logic ought to work in both cases. To reproduce: autoreconf -vi mkdir -p build/py33 virtualenv -p python3.3 build/py33/ve . build/py33/ve/bin/activate easy_install testtools && easy_install testscenarios python setup.py install cd build/py33 ../../configure make distcheck Leaving out the 'python setup.py install' makes all the tests work.
