I then attempted to add my Samsung ML-2510 printer originally connected to a Windows machine. After being unsuccessful, I directly connected it via USB to my laptop. No Samsung ML-2510 model was listed when I attempted to add the printer through system-config-printer. I had used one of the ML-2550 drivers on 8.04, but this wasn't working. I then connected the printer via USB to my sister's laptop with a fresh install of 10.04. Amazingly, ML-2510 was listed in system-config-printer with the SpliX PPD driver. I selected it and the printer worked just fine. So the issue seems to be that the SpliX drivers are not listed after upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04, but it does appear on a fresh install. I attempted to reinstall the splix 2.0.0-2ubuntu3 package on my laptop. I verified that the /usr/share/ppd/splix directory had the appropriate .ppd files on both laptops. After further comparing the contents of /usr/share/ppd on both laptops, I realized that mine (upgraded from 8.04) had two symlinks not present on the fresh install: 1-local- admin, 2-third-party. After removing the 1-local-admin file, system- config-printer now lists the ML-2510 SpliX driver. I found in this changelog http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/c/cups/cups_1.4.2-9/changelog an entry for 1.4.0~svn8773-1: * debian/cups.postinst: Do not create the /usr/share/ppd/1-local-admin and /usr/share/ppd/2-third-party links. They are not needed with current CUPS and they also break the test procedure during package build. I guess this would explain why the fresh install didn't have these symlinks present, but since they were present on my 8.04 install, they apparently were not removed during the upgrade. I don't know why the presence of the 1-local-admin file caused the SpliX drivers to not be displayed in 10.04. As for the bug, it seems the upgrade process of cups packages (or whatever package is appropriate) should maybe remove these symlinks if they exist. I'm not sure what process would remove these, but it seems broken the way it is now.
