For example having the LED flash red while charging and white while being fully charged but still plugged. That way one can immediately see when the phone has finished charging. Given that those LEDs are all RGB nowadays we could even be more clever. How about something like this? * you plug an empty phone, LED turns on, lights red * as the phone charges, the LED does a color animation towards green so you could see a half charged phone when the orange light is glowing or know it's mostly ready when the light is greenish. Obviously any charging state indication should be overridden by the blue one for indicating missing calls/messages we already have.
