OK, after no help in finding how to install the suggested program, and a lot of fruitless searching I finally stumbled acros :
https://launchpad.net/~diwic/+archive/ubuntu/ppa More specifically you need this : https://launchpad.net/~diwic/+archive/ubuntu/hda To install do the following : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:diwic/hda sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install snd-hda-tools Once I ran it I got the following, if it makes any sense : sudo hdajacksensetest Pin 0x15 (Black Headphone, Rear side): present = Yes Pin 0x18 (Black Mic, Rear side): present = Yes Ironically the laptop has a pair of sockets at the front for headphones but no actual ´rear´ ones. It seems that whether the headphones are plugged in or not the system believes that they are, and that the internal speakers are therefore ´disconnected´ WIll happily diagnose/test further if someone tells me what to do. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1408856 Title: [HP Pavilion dv6700 Notebook PC, Realtek ALC268, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Sound won´t work on default install on internal speakers or headphones.
