firefox is launched as web browser even though it isnt the default

Bug description:
Many applications which launch the (usually) default browser (which
for me is chromium) have been launching firefox instead. I double-
checked and my default browser is chromium.
Some examplary applications where this takes place:
- The "Website" links withing Software Center
- ubuntu-bug
- Links withing Pidgin chats
