Your problem can also be a hardware defect on the computer side. Did you test the printer(s) on other computers running Ubuntu? Do you also have problems with other USB devices? If your computer dual-boots to Windows, does the problem occur there, too?
As a workaround, you can at least make the printing (not the scanning and/or fax) functionality working by using the printer as a network printer. If it does not have a network interface, connect it to the USB port of your router or NAS and then it should appear as a network printer with the IP/host name of your router or NAS (in some cases you need to activate print server functionality via the web interface of your router or NAS).
