You can easily restore and use the classic tray icon which is provided by xfce4-power-manager. Do not forget to remove the "indicator-power" package.
Since indicator-power is maintained by the Ubuntu Desktop developers, I am not sure if they are willing to change its behavior/functionality to mimic something different. On top of that, Xubuntu 14.10 has dropped indicator-power in favor of the new xfce4-power-manager panel plugin. ** Package changed: xfce4-power-manager (Ubuntu) => indicator-power (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to indicator-power in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1380115 Title: tooltip missing Status in indicator-power package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: The battery icon is missing tooltip information such as remaining time (to charge on AC or to zero when on battery). It used to be there in the older version (suposingly gnome applet?). E.g. Orgage panel clock or Pidgin icons show tooltips normally.
