Title:
CVE-2025-46836 fix breaks interface counters for ifconfig

Status in net-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in net-tools package in Debian:
  Unknown

Bug description:
After the update for CVE-2025-46836 updated systems do not display
  interface counters any more:

          RX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B)
          RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0
          TX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B)
          TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0

  Platform: 22.04.5 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish)

What I expected: Non-zero counters, specifically the non-zero numbers
  from /proc/net/dev

  (Reporting as security=yes - hope that's okay, because it's
  brokenness, apparently from the fix)
