disabled the apparmor with: sudo aa-complain cupsd did: sudo apt-get install libnss-myhostname (due to msgs seen in /var/log/syslog) upgraded the HPLIP package manually from the HP site: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/downloads.html to version 3.14.10 and let it (re-)create the default print queue. turned the printer off, then back on (watched the msgs in /var/log/syslog go by)
