Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. I am reassigning this bug to xkeyboard-config, because
the keyboard data is shipped in xkb-data.

Adding new layouts should be go through the upstream project instead of
carrying patches only in Ubuntu. So please submit your change to
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-config. I am
marking this bug as invalid due to this. If landed upstream, feel free
to reopen this bug report.

Have you considered using an existing layout to get what you want?
NeoQwertz (see https://neo-layout.org/Layouts/neoqwertz/) would provide
that. It puts the programming keys on an easy to reach layer 3.

I am using Noted (see https://neo-layout.org/Layouts/noted/) which has a
better key layout and programming keys on layer 3 and number / arrow
keys on layer 4. I highly recommend testing those.

** Package changed: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) => xkeyboard-config (Ubuntu)

Title:
Add modified german keyboard layout for programming to reduce RSI

Status in xkeyboard-config package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I'm a software developer writing quite a lot of code.

The way the german keybooard is layed out, some essential keys like
brackets and backslash are very awkward to type (right hand holding
Alt-GR in bottom row and pressing the key right of the 0-key in top
  row to get a backslash).

After years of doing this, i started to suffer from RSI (repetitive
  strain injury).

I'm attaching a patch for an additional keyboard layout that puts all
those hard to reach one-handed brackets, braces and backslash on the
Umlaut keys. The Umlauts are still available in their normal place
through Alt-GR for occasional use, but i mostly use Scroll-Lock to
switch to an unmodified no-deadkeys layout when typing german text.

I have been using this layout now for 3 years, and it has greatly
reduced suffering, while still enabling me to do my job.
