I have the same issue on a Dell OptiPlex system that originally came with Ubuntu 20.04. It ran fine under 22.04, but shows the issues described since I upgraded to 24.04.
I can confirm that some Gnome applications and Firefox seems to be affected. Gnome terminal in particular freezes each time a new window is opened. Firefox freezes almost constantly, and is pretty much unusable. Gnome settings and system updater are also affected. A bunch of third- party applications like QtCreator, RStudio, Zotero, Google Chrome etc. seem unaffected. I am running on X11 since as far as I know, Gnome still forces X11 applications to be scaled on HighDPI displays when running on XWayland. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to gtk+3.0 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2081281 Title: gnome terminal and other apps freezes for about 30 seconds Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: After I did a release upgrade from 22.04 LTS to 24.04.1 LTS some GUI operations lead to a freezing app. I first observed it in gnome-terminal when clicking the plus sign to open another tab. Another example is gnome-control-center. If klick to open the control center help page, the control center freezes. And here is another example. In firefox if I want to fill out a html form, opening a drop down item lets freeze firefox for a while. All examples highlight a infobox asking, if I want to wait for the app to respond or kill it. I tried it using X11 or Wayland. Both show the same beavior. I also switched to another desktop manger (from gdm to sddm) but the behavior is the same. I created a new user but also the behavior is the same. I downloaded a live image of Ubuntu Studio and started it from a usb stick, so all was fine. I guess the problem is in the deep of the system, maybe the kernel, but I do not have the knowledge to investigate it.
