My system did not boot to the login screen after updating my Linux
kernel to 6.8.0-41 generic on nvidia-driver-555 (black screen, no
blinking cursor). The problem does not exist on the older kernel,
6.8.0-40 generic. Resuming system boot on the recovery screen also does
not boot the system (this time there is a blinking cursor).
After purging of all nvidia driver packages (`dpkg -l | grep "nvidia"` &
`sudo apt purge `) within recovery mode, the system is able to reboot
successfully to the login screen.
Reinstalling nvidia-driver-555 does not help and the problem remains.
However, if you install nvidia-driver-550, there is no problem and
everything works perfectly.
I didn't try booting back into the older kernel with 555 driver, but I
suspect that would work since I was already using that configuration
before.
