so it seems this is a partial fix, system sounds are still broken, and the gnome speaker test is still broken, but sound is working for specific applications. sound will work for chromium and firefox, testing with "speaker-test -t wav -c" also results in no sound. this shows up as "alsa plugin speaker test" in gnome. leading me to believe this might be something with alsa under the hood
