No I did not have any other device attached to the laptop nor am I having any problems with grub before the splash screen. But I did figure it out how this is happening in my case. Basically, whenever I boot up the laptop, and login to my account, and then shut down or restart, in this case it works fine. But whenever I boot up and shut down or restart without logging into my account, in this case, the next time I boot up it freezes on the splash screen. So then I have to boot up and shut down from the USB drive, and this seems to somehow fix the problem, and then it boots up OK from the internal HDD.

I didn't know what to do, but I still had the USB from which I had installed Ubuntu, so I plugged it in and booted up from the USB, and then I pressed the shutdown button, and before it shut down Ubuntu asked me to remove the installation media and press OK, I did, the laptop shut down, and now I booted up my laptop as usual, not from the USB, and this time it did not get stuck on the splash screen. So I left it at that, but just now, I booted up my laptop, and again it got stuck again, and so again I did the boot up from the USB, shut down, remove USB, and reboot as usual from the laptops HDD. Now it works again. This problem seems to happen on a random basis. I hope this helps to solve this problem.
