I found that choosing the CUPS+Gutenprint driver speeds up the printing tremendously and reduces PCL errors to zero. So I suggest to set that one as default instead of "Samsung ML-4600 Foomatic/pxlmono (recommended)", which at present installs automatically.
Does this apply to other printers as well? ** Changed in: cups (Ubuntu) Status: New => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to cups in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1797425 Title: printing docs with images is very slow - PCL printer Status in cups package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: ubuntu 18.04 - Intel Xeon 8 core workstation - default driver for samsung ML-4600 The printer is an old Samsung ML-4600 USB laser printer, but it does its job. On a 8core workstation, printing starts immediately if it's text only. The print itself is always done in 10" or so. A 26kB LibO doc, containing a tiny 8k image only, needs 2min 6" till the printer starts printing. With a 900kB image in the doc, the time is exactly the same. With scribus and the tiny 8K image, it takes 45s till the printer starts action. When trying to print a heavy 2MB per page PDF doc, it takes more than 10 min till the printer starts to act. Odd - with top I cannot see any printing activity causing relevant cpu load, but I think at least one core should do heavy rasterizing work. I love linux to support old hardware - but this is not state-of-the- art, hope improvements are possible.
