^ that solution worked for me. I can't believe that such a basic system functionality can get messed up by user config files!

I thus ran gst-launch-1.0 filesrc location=mysong.mp3 ! decodebin ! audioconvert ! alsasink And this error came up: ERROR: pipeline could not be constructed: no element "filesrc". I dug a little through the google searches, and using gstreamer- inspect1.0, I was able to list all the installed plugins. Amazingly, *none of the coreelements plugins are present*. Is there a way to fix this? Is there a packet that might have been forgotten in the 13.10-14.04 update process? PS: I have troubles with *all* the gstreamer-dependent application on my 14.04 install so this is probably related.
