Public bug reported:

What happens:
plugging in headphones in the front jack is detected (icon in the sound
settings is changed to headphones correctly), but no sound is played through
the headphones. Sound is still reproduced through speakers plugged in the back
and the volume settings are being ignored.

Expected results:
sound plays through the headphones when headphones are plugged in and when they
are plugged in, speakers are not playing any audio.
