Title:
Upgrading to Karmic breaks printing for Canon UFRII printers with
canon drivers MF4140 etc
Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: cups
I installed the Canon printer driver under Jaunty (9.04) and printing to the
Canon MF4140 worked perfectly.
I upgraded to Karmic (9.10) and printing no longer worked. I downgraded only
the hal-cups-util package and it works again.
I am reporting this as a bug on cups as it seems to cover several packages.
It appears the ability to execute /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal is _essential_
for canon UFR II drivers.
Canon's UFR II printer driver is widely used to support their low cost
printers that do not run a PDL (PS/PDF/PCL) interpreter.
The installed driver package was
> Canon UFR II Printer Driver for Linux. This printer driver provides
printing functions for Canon printers operating under the
> CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) environment, a printing system that
operates on Linux operating systems.

This was the consistent problem. As described in it's README, the
package hal-cups-utils was a place holder as the ubuntu developers
have mode to udev and system-config-printer-udev. This unfortunately
breaks this printer driver.
Checking Ubuntu Packages I found that Jaunty's hal-cups-utils might be
installable. So I purged the current and downloaded and installed the
previous.
