Thanks for reporting this bug and help making ubuntu better! I don't know if this bug is special to the ubuntu session or related to the gnome-settings-daemon. Something to check: - installing the gnome vanilla session (sudo apt install gnome-session), reboot and switch to the "GNOME" session in GDM. - you should have the Adwaita theme there. Check if you can reproduce the bug - please report here if you can reproduce it. If there is a bug in that session, do you mind filing the bug against upstream bugzilla in gnome-settings-daemon.
