Title:
Dual mic system does not work unless both mics have a different volume
  ALC269 Intel HDA

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Linux 3.0.0-12-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 14:50:42 UTC 2011 i686 i686
i386 GNU/Linux
  Distributor ID: Ubuntu
  Description: Ubuntu 11.10
  Release: 11.10
  Codename: oneiric
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 02)
  HDA Intel ALC269

By default applications cannot listen to audio input from the laptop
mic. There are two workarounds for this.

  Either) Uninstall pulseaudio
Or) Open Pavucontrol and set the right mic to a lower volume than that of the
left mic. In my case left is on 100% and right on 95%

This exact same issue is experienced by many other users with the same
  hardware.

Note: The original blog post mentions the person removing pulseaudio

Note: The top answer states to use different volumes

Note post #6 suggests different volume.

This bug has been around for a long while now in many Ubuntu releases.
