[VIA VT1708] pactl stat failed to find default card

Bug description:
Binary package hint: pulseaudio
After a boot, everything works on the sound card for output. I have
the mic turned on (in the sound preferences) but no application using
it. I start Skype or sound recorder and the hardware sound card
disappears. That means that in the Sound preferences, there is no
hardware listed at all. I have made various to "reload" the hardware
but no success. I am trying random things gleened from online help.
A reboot will bring the hardware back and output works fine. It all
started 1) after I loaded cononical Skype and 2) after I turned the
mic on in the preferences. I believe if I leave the mic off, then
output works even in skype and the hardware is not "lost". Sorry, I
wish I had more details to provide, you folks are awesome!
