KDE->Gnome switch leaves PA silent

Bug description:
Binary package hint: pulseaudio
I had booted up, logged in KDE4, logged out and logged back in Gnome.
KDE had played it's startup tune.
In Gnome Exaile wasnt' playing anything; time progressed but nothing came out
of my internal audio.
Sound preferences shows the app, it shows the correct output selected and
shows the output volume OK - just nothing comes out.
/var/log/user.log has the following weirdness in it:
