I checked my setup and I am set to Discrete Graphics in BIOS, not Hybrid. So the Intel firmware should not really matter, it should be all nvidia. I am using the x-org open-source driver for the nvidia card, not the proprietary nvidia one.
16.10 and 17.04 do have their issues on the P50, most notable sleep problems. I could never get 16.10 to sleep and wake properly, 17.04 is better but my external keyboard doesn't work after waking. Other than that (and the lack of LTS, of course) they seem pretty good. One other reason to upgrade (or at least upgrade the kernel) is that the Thunderbolt didn't work under 16.04 but does with kernel 4.8 and above. But of you don't have a Thunderbolt drive that won't matter. Good luck, hope you get it sorted out.
