Christopher, Thanks for the communication. The computer I'm using to test the Ubuntu 16.04 installation is home-built, with a Biostar G41-M7 motherboard hosting an Intel E2220 processor and 2GiB RAM.
Incidentally, I have not experienced any further cursor problems, or other problems, since the day I installed the OS.
