After installing the newer Utopic stack and watching some videos in full
screen, the issue hasn't repeated. I believe it's been fixed.

The live disk I used was created a long time ago (hence the 14.05.1
version) which is the reason why newer updates hadn't been installed.
However, the updater never notified me that there were potential updates.
Should I expect necessary updates like this in the future?

Thank you for your help.

Title:
radeon 0000:01:00.0: ring 0 stalled for more than 10016msec

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
While watching a video in full screen, video freezes followed by audio
stopping, then display says "no signal."

The first time this happens the video will begin again about 10
seconds later. However, when it happens again the display cannot be
  reactivated without a reboot.

dmesg logs the above error message and the subsequent measures to
softreset the GPU. Error occurs at 615 seconds.

Graphics card is Radeon HD 7870.
