It might be possible but you're asking for years of bug reports in all the apps where such a hack doesn't quite work.

They only close (in some cases) if you click on the app itself or are forced to select a menu item. This is an expected problem, as Mir does not yet implement pointer grabs, which is what toolkits use to auto-close menus when you click outside them.
