One option is to make the keyboard a floating window rather than docked at the bottom, like windows 10. however this needs UX review and a UX designer needs to be assigned.

Also the height of the keys could be reduced (just leave them as they are on the phone) as they look quite huge compared to the rest of the UI and take up a lot of real estate on screen.
