As a consequence, during the recent Scrollbar usertesting session, users found pressing on the steppers challenging as they believed it required moving the pointer exactly inside the stepper triangle (arrows). The new visual design iteration added hovered and pressed states for both the steppers buttons (i.e. the clickable squares that include the arrow) and the thumb.
